I’m please to announce the beta preview of Binary Turf Forums. Before I let you go and take a look I recommend you read through and get equipped with the essential information to get started.

Why a forum?

In these days of CMS, blogs and wikis, forums sound like an outdated lot. However forums have stood the test of time and are a powerful tool to interact, share, provide support and build a community that shares the synergy amongst common interests. But if the word ‘forum’ sounded dull, let me assure you that its not - not these ones. I’ve taken out time and have worked on designing them for over a week now - to design it for ease of use and add that extra appeal of a web 2.0 design with beautiful icons (no I’m not inviting any arguments pertaining to web 2.0 : )

The integrated search engine is a full featured Google powered Custom Search Engine which let’s you harness all Google power to satiate your search needs. Just in case you need more you can go to the built in Advanced Search feature and needle search by topics and titles etc.

Another Beta?

After all the web design, development, configuration and time spent, I only found it apt to announce it as a beta lest something breaks and everyone cries foul. I’m still working on it and hopefully there will be better features implemented while we get some mods involved.

Purpose

The primary intention is to invite and open communication with Firefox fans and ColorfulTabs and CuteMenus2 users thereby modularising the content and subjects of the site. As and when and if time allows I’d like to extend this to provide tech support especially in the Windows operating systems domain and share my expertise and zest for technology.

Feedback

Not the usual yada yada, I strongly urge you to report any issues to me or the admins and the mods. If there’s some feature that’s broken or you’d like to request feel free to contact me. You can write to me at (varun21 at gmail dot com) or use the contact form here.

Now that you are ready and all set, feel free to get started with Binary Turf Forums.

Now is this what you would call innovation? They keep doing the same thing over and over again and yet they some how make news? i call it luck and Gods blessings. One reason why I believe in God. How else can you explain Microsoft’s survival. Well this is the second time Microsoft has repeated the act. Last time they did this was on the launch on Firefox 2. And yes someone did comment “…no it was not poisoned…”. So what? Microsoft has had a history of having committed such acts. They dumped a giant metal IE logo on Netscape’s front lawn. They then placed a statue of Netscape’s green Mozilla mascot.

But finally Firefox has its cake and is eating it too :) Take a look at the cake.

How many of us remember about the Google extension called Google synch that used to synchronise the history, cookies, bookmarks and even your tab session? After upgrading to Firefox 3, I started looking for the updated version of Google Synch. Once I landed on the download page, it said that it is no longer available. But it did point me to another extension - Mozilla Weave.

Mozilla Weave is another leap in the world of online computing. Now that more than half our lives are spent online a majority of us have the issue of keeping our data, settings and preferences in synch. Take for example your home and office. You’d like to have your bookmarks on the office computer accessible to you at home also. There comes Mozilla Weave. Its the next generation of web tools that make your online life easier. Mozilla Weave synchronises all your profile data. Curently the extension is in beta thus some features are disabled. As of now it is able to synchronise your bookmarks, history, cookies, saved passwords, tabs, saved form data. All this data is stored online on Mozilla hosted servers and you have a choice to encrypt your data.

The utility of this extension is manifold. I did run into a few issues though. The first run wizard sometimes just disables itself. It cannot synchronise Firefox with another running instance of Firefox. Lets say you are trying to synchronise Firefox at your home with the one at office and you left Firefox running at your office, Weave will throw an error. Considering that this is a beta version of the extension, this is acceptable.

Weave plans to add features like synchronising complete profiles including themes and extensions. But even at this nascent stage it has become an indespensible tool. Give it a try and step into the online world.

We have released ColorfulTabs v3.2 today. This is more of a feature update than a bug fix. ColorfulTabs now supports fixed colors for upto 5 domains. This means you can have fixed colors of your choice for upto 5 domains.

In the future I’m planning to add regular expression capabilities to the feature so that you can have complex expressions to set a color for any domain. If there are any feature requests or bug reports please leave a comment on this post. (I often loose allt he feature requests and bug reports in my email :) I’ll be glad to improve things.

Do let me know how this build works. All the best and Enjoy. Do not forget to subscribe to the RSS here (yes the squarish orange icon on the top left).

CuteMenus2 has been updated for Firefox 3. I had a lot of requests about this one as none of the other variations has made it to Firefox 3 till now. You can download CuteMenus2 from http://binaryturf.com/software/cutemenus2-for-firefox/. An update has also been posted for review on AMO but a lot of addon updates have been released on AMO in the last one or two days and I’m expecting some delay on that front. I’m sure the AMO reviewers have a long queue to clear.

I’m planning to add a new context menu skin in the future release essentially on the looks of Vista. I hope you enjoy this release.

SitePoint is giving away a free ebook with documentation about Firefox 3. It guides you through all of the new features of Firefox3 - on the interface and behind. It also contains a lot of information that will equip you to make the most out of this feature packed browser.

For effective use, as a first step it is important that you know about the features of the software you use. As a second step it is vital to bring your knowledge into practise. Take for example the awesome bar. Highlighted as one of the prime features of Firefox 3, I did take  little while to get used to it. That was not because it was difficult to use but because I took time quitting the old habit of typing URLs. Yes, with the new URL bar is Firefox 3 you can type and search your bookmarks and history. So the next time I download Firefox I don’t have to remember the link. Just start typing “Firefox” and get to it.

So, here’s the link to grab your free ebook from SitePoint http://www.sitepoint.com/books/firefox3/.

So I sat down over the weekend and compiled the SSE and SSE2 optimised builds of Firefox 3 RC3. This in all probability is going to be the release version of Firefox going to be released tomorrow the 17th. So if you are not using Firefox 3 RC3 now is a good time to check it out. I’m expecting a lot of reviews to be posted right after Firefox 3 release.

On the other hand I’ve also updated ColorfulTabs at AMO just to be prepared for Firefox 3 launch. So many visitors frequenting AMO will find the updated version there too. That’s all for today. Keep the fingers crossed for Firefox 3 release.
