I have some interesting plans for posts on Binary Turf. One of them is to start a Weekly Showcase featuring some of the interesting sites I visit during the week and possibly mention what I like about them and what they could enhance further.
This week's Showcase has two entries, Bmovies.com by Wade Austin and Mogul Review by David Coello.
Bmovies.com
I came across this site while I was running without a Television Set. I planned to visit the countryside during the vacation and I chose to carry my laptop along (which I realised later was a good decision considering the limited scope of activities there). I'm a complete movie buff when away from my computer. I watch movies with a keen interest into all aspects of filmmaking. And I watch my favourite movies several times across a time span of months and years.
Bmovies.com is all about movies. The fun side to it is that there's no need to sign-up or log-in. All you need is a broadband connection; look up the movie of your choice and start watching it online. if you are a movie buff, this is the place to head out to.
About the Site Design
Bmovies.com is conceptualised by Wade who is also the principle developer of the site. The sight is one good example of liquid layouts I've come across. The site demonstrates an excellent design for an HTML 4.01 Transitional document in the age of Web 2.0. The layout is table based while utilising CSS to keep elegance in design and code modularity. Here's what I like about it.
- Good search engine optimisation.
- Flexible width layout even for screen resolutions as low as 800 by 600.
- Elegance in showcasing the content
- Good navigation.
- Colour combination and contrast.
- Unobtrusive ads placement.
There's little that I want to point out in terms of something lacking in the design. However I didn't find an 'About Us' or 'Contact us' page. The bookmark link to StumbleUpon is way at the bottom and could be missed by the end-users. Ideally it could be at the movies' details page and could simply mention bookmark which could link to a a list of other bookmarking sites (as everyone may not be using StumbleUpon)
Mogul Review
Actually, this is a site in the making and will launch on 2nd Feb 2008. I mention it for its concept. Mogul Review is for the talented at the art of Music (quite like myself :). If you have what it takes to mark an impression at Music, Mogul Review provides you the medium to showcase your talent and help it reach the professionals.
I find the concept more appealing than the other side of talent hunt in reality shows which in fact showcases arts in a not-so-positive spirit. It's meant for the more serious artist looking to make a mark in his art than keen to earn. So setup a small make-shift studio, record your piece and have it featured on Mogul Review. One advantage is that you can take as many takes and re-takes as you may to perfect your recording. Another one is that it saves you (to a certain degree) from the troubles of physically visiting promoters/professional
Site Design
Not much to mention about the design as it's in the making. At the first look you notice that the background colour is the brighter red which feels a little straining to the eyes. The layout is a fixed-width table based with an XHTML 1.0 Transitional document (doesn't validate yet even for well-formedness ). Hope this gets fixed before the launch.
